GROUNDWATER INFORMATION
NL 2. SSS§4.1. Groundwater depths and elevations throughout San Joaquin County are illustrated
on published by the County Flood Control and Water Conservation District. The most recent Lines
of Equal Depth map(Spring 2011)do not illustrate groundwater depths in the Delta area due to shallow
conditions. As noted from hand-drilling,the water table was measured at 6.75 ft below existing grade.
The groundwater directional flow is generally in a northwesterly direction toward the San Joaquin River.
Groundwater flow in this locale is extremely variable due to several influences such as the time of the year,
surrounding irrigation, and tidal effects.
SSS§2.1, 2. Since the property was intensely farmed, and since surrounding properties have also been
intensely ed for several decades, the probability for high nitrate concentrations in the underlying
groundwater is significant and this was observed in the water table sample. The agrichemical
dibromochloropropane(DBCP)is typically analyzed for similar projects, but for this study,EHD waived
testing since DBCP was never used in this locale.
NLS 2.2,;SSS§4.2. The project has an(on- ite water well for domestic purposes. There is also a
I arge -si dwell that is used to su)iplmoistute for the composting piles. The following Table
illustrates a nitraentrations found in each of the three sampled water sources:
TABLE 4 _
WATER TABLE,DOMESTIC WELL AND IRRIGATION WELL TEST RESULTS
ANALYTE WATER TABLE DO TIC WELL IRRIGATION WELL
NITRATE 314 4.88 8/L 4.74 mg/L
(45 =MCL) (4in =MCL) mgLL=MCL)
TOTAL ALKALINITY 439 ppm Did Not Test Did Not Test
Calculation of Alkalinity Requirement for Nitrification
The nitrate-nitrogen loading calculations on Page 8 are contingent upon the environmental factors required
for nitrification to occur. These conditions include soil pore-space oxygen content, soil temperature,pH,
electrical conductivity, organic matter, cation exchange capacity, and alkalinity. Alkalinity in wastewater
effluent is derived from the encountered water table water in addition to the introduction of wastes.
Nitrification consumes approximately 7.1 mg of alkalinity for every mg of ammonia-nitrogen(NH4-N)
oxidized.
4
