Fi. File No. 20-3821-O1.G01 kn K L E I N F E L D E R
January 6, 1995
For floor slabs not to contain heavy storage or equipment loads, we recommend that floor slabs
be a minimum of 4 inches in thickness and be reinforced with at least wire mesh placed at
midpoint in the slabs. For floor slabs that will contain heavy loads, thicker floor slabs on the
order of 5 to 6 inches, or more, will likely be required. The actual floor slab thickness and
reinforcing design should be provided by the structural engineer.
4. Site Preparation and Gradine
Site preparation should include the stripping and removal of all vegetation and debris from the
areas of construction. The vegetation and debris should not be incorporated in any of the
structural fills. The actual depth of stripping should be determined in the field by a
representative of our firm. Voids left by the removal of foundations, trees and their root
systems, underground utilities, or other buried objects should be overexcavated and
4 recompacted, free of debris.
After stripping and removal of vegetation and debris, and before placement of any Engineered
L Fill, the exposed surface soil within and to a minimum of 5 feet beyond all building areas
should be scarified to a minimum depth of 12 to 18 inches and be recompacted to a minimum
of 90 percent of the maximum dry density as determined by the ASTM D-1557 test procedure
L; at a moisture content near optimum. Any extremely loose pockets of soil or debris encountered
r during this process should be overexcavated and recompacted.
4L Any fill required to bring the site to finished grade should consist of on-site soils, free of
debris, or imported granular nonexpansive soil having a maximum percentage passing the No.
200 Sieve of 40, a maximum Plasticity Index of 8, and a minimum R-Value of 40. Such
imported fill should be compacted at a moisture content at or near optimum. We recommend
that samples of any proposed imported fill soil be submitted to the soils engineer for approval
( prior to being taken to the site.
LL Engineered Fill beneath building slabs should be placed in horizontal layers a maximum of 8
inches in loose thickness and be compacted to a minimum of 90 percent of the maximum dry
density as determined by the ASTM D-1557 test procedure. Compaction in areas beneath
pavement areas should be a minimum of 95 percent of the maximum dry density as determined
by the above test procedure.
We recommend that structural and trench backfill be placed in the same manner as Engineered
Fill. In our opinion, trench backfill outside building areas may be jetted. However, if jetting
is performed sufficient time should be set aside to allow consolidation to occur. In addition,
density tests should be taken to confirm the recommended compaction.
1_
I..
L
Copyright 1995 Klcinfclder. Inc. Page 5 of 9
