= 1 yr.
Nh = Assumed to be 0.1 ppm NO3-N
0.15 in/vr(103 mg N/L) (1 - 0.10)+Q3 in/yr x 0.1 mg/L)
Nr = (0.15 in/yr+ 13 in/yr) 7
Nr = 1.2 ppm as nitrate-nitrogen (NO3-N) or 5.3 ppm as nitrate (NO3)
C. SEPTIC SYSTEM COMPONENTS BASED ON EHD SEWAGE STANDARDS
The septic system components and parameters for this parcel are based upon the factors of
operation, longevity, and environmental protection, which are all in accordance with the San
Joaquin County Environmental Health Department Sewage Standards. Of significance is Section
8.8.6 of the Standards which states: At least 60% of all septic system structures must be in leach
lines except in hardpan/clay soils.
SEPTIC TANK
Septic tanks affect the sludge, scum and effluent volumes, which in turn affect treatment of
nitrogen within the tanks. Typically,the volumetric capacity of septic tanks serving commercial
facilities should be equal to approximately 5 times the average daily flow(ADF or QAvE). In the
following example, a pump-out interval of three years has been used in the calculations. The
peaking value is normally taken to be 1.5 for commercial projects.
SEPTIC TANK CAPACITY EXAMPLE:
Recommended tank capacity for a pump out interval of three yrs: 2.8(QAVE)x Peaking Factor (PF)
=2.8(4 people x 30 gals/day = 120 gals/day)x 1.5 = 504 gal tank capacity required:
Use one - 1,200 gallon tank with effluent filter.
DETENTION TIME EXAMPLE:
Detention Time= 1,200 gal tank capacity x 0.70 (30%volume lost to sludge/scum accumulation)
1.5 (Peaking factor) x 120 gals/day
Detention Time=4.7 days. The minimum acceptable detention time is 1.0 day.
LL
Page -7-
Ch mq Consulting
