Additional venting will be provided as needed, with additional
openings being made (Vees with 4" extensions cut with a knife). If at a later time a
vent made with a knife is no longer needed, it-will be sealed with tape. When the
compost has been determined to reach the desired maturity, the matrix will be
checked for moisture. Several different methods may be used to determine the
moisture. These include: use a core sampler or by making an inspection opening
large enough to be able to dig into the matrix to check the moisture content.
• Monitoring & reporting
At the start of a composting cycle, temperatures will be taken and recorded daily to
see that the feedstock and existing conditions is resulting in satisfactory results. All
temperature measurements will be taken at 6 inches to 1 foot below the surface of
the bag. Temperature measurements at this level will ensure that an adequate
internal temperature can be maintained to ensure a pathogen kill near the surface of
the bag. Full probe depth temperatures (-2 feet) will also be taken initially during the
pathogen destruction phase of the composting process.
Each unusual event will be recorded on the record sheet for future reference.
Recording an event such as changing the aeration program will help explain
41
Edgar&Associates, Inc.
