T
l
f
CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
From visual observations, there is no surface contamination. The probability of subsurface
contamination from pesticides can be considered low-to-nonexistent, considering the
environmental fate data and the underlying soil hardpan stratum. The soil type is predominately
a silty sand with the biological activity expected to be lower than a clay soil, but the aerobic
environment of the sandy soil should promote degradation and decomposition of organic
molecules. As referenced, groundwater testing for nitrate and DBCP have been performed to
complete the requirements of the Nitrate Loading/Soil Suitability Study-The nitrate
concentration in the Sephos domestic well is comparatively low at 18 ppm. .-It is unpredictable as
to whether this concentration will increase. Both pesticides DBCP and EDB were non-detect.
Therefore, at this point in time, no corrective action is required within the boundaries of the
subject property.
The Nitrate Loading Study determined nitrate contamination to be primarily originating from the
Southland Mobile Home Park, west of the subject property..,The high density housing to the east
and southeast is also contributing nitrate to the underlying groundwater, but not to the extent that
the Mobile Home Park has.
We do not recommend the well water be tested for a multi-residue pesticide screen consisting of
analysis for Dinitroanaline, Triazine, Organochlorine and Organophosphates. The subject
property is outside delineated areas in which all new wells must have a grout seal to 200 feet.
However, it is our opinion the wells for the two proposed Parcels should be grouted to at least
100 ft and preferably 125 ft. It was determined from the Nitrate Loading Study that nitrate
concentration diminishes significantly below 120 ft. Regardless of the well water analysis,
bottled water should be used for drinking and cooking purposes in rural areas.
It is our opinion that potential impact to the Sephos domestic well originating from the on-site ,
septic tank and leachfield is unlikely since the well is sealed from 0 to 90 feet below grade.
Contamination from a septic tank is usually dependent upon the age and type of tank
construction material and since the tank is relatively new, there should be no leakage. The next
time the tank is pumped out,the sewage contractor can check its integrity.
5
Vafley Ag Research
