S
LIVE OAK GEO ENVIRONMENTAL, INC.
407 W.Oak St., Lodi, CA 95240,0- (209)369-0375.• logelodi.com
June 4, 2010
Transmitted by U.S. Mail
Project Number: 1010
John Van Groningen
15100 Jack Tone Rd.
Manteca,CA 95336
Regarding: Water Testing Results
Van Groningen Property Soil Suitability Study
APN 245-160-31 &portion of 245-160.24
13799 E. Clinton South Ave., Ripon,CA
Dear Mr.Van Groningen-.-
We
roningen:We have received the analytical results for the water sample collected on your property as part of the
above Soil Suitability Study. Details of the sample collection were included on page 3 through 4 of the
report.
Dibromochloropropane (DBCP)wasnotted-in-the`mple.
Nitrate was detected at a concentration of 325 mg/L-NO3. Thii result is well above the Maximum
Contaminant-Leve( L)of 45 mg°/L-NO3set by the US El? . In our experience, this high level is not
unusual for theareaou may wish to discuss methods of reducing the nitrate levels in your drinking
water-with-the Environmental Health Department and/or a well contractor. For health reasons, we —
recommend that the well water not be consumed until nitrate levels can be reduced to below the MCL.
Utilizing bottled water for drinking water may be a good alternative to consider.
Although nitrate is a naturally-occurring compound necessary for plant growth, it can cause health
problems when present at high levels in drinking water. The most common health effect of nitrates in
water is methemoglobinemia or blue baby syndrome, which results in reduced.oxygen supply to vital
tissues. Pregnant women and certain others can also develop methemoglobinemia. Symptoms include a
bluish color of the skin, as well as headache, dizziness, weakness, and difficulty breathing. Ingestion of
high levels of nitrates over time can also lead to gastric problems.
We appreciate the opportunity to work on this project. If we can be of any further assistance, please do
not hesitate to call.
Sincerely,
Live Oak GeoEnvironmental,Inc.
David J.Welch, CEG, CHG, PGP, Owner
CC: San Joaquin County Environmental Health Department
Environmental 42• Engineering Geology ❖ Geophysics
