I
0
i
CALIFORNIA REGIONAL WATER QUALITY CONTROL BOARD
j CENTRAL VALLEY REGION
ORDER NO. R5-2002-0034
WASTE DISCHARGE REQUIREMENTS
FOR
SUTTER HOME WINERY
__
ODI FACILITY
SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY
The California Regional Water Quality Control Board, Central Valley Region, (hereafter Board) finds
that:
1. Sutter Home Winery(hereafter Discharger) submitted a Report of Waste Discharge (RWD) dated
2 August 2001 to treat and dispose of process wastewater generated in a winery. An addendum to
the RWD was submitted on 15 November 2001 and additional material was submitted on
13 December 2001.
2. The RWD was prepared to address an existing operation. Because wastewater discharge was
initiated without first obtaining WDRs, the Discharger was ordered to prepare an Operation and
Maintenance Plan and Groundwater Monitoring Workplan. Those reports are contained in the
15 November 2001 RWD.
3. Sutter Home Winery owns the property where the winery facility and the wastewater ponds and
land application areas, are located. The Discharger will store approximately 18 million gallons of
wine per year.
4. The winery was constructed in 1998 and is located on 297 acres (Assessor's Parcel Nos. 011-15-
12, 011-15-23, 011-09-03, and 011-09-14) in Sections 34 and 35, T4N, R5E, MDB&M, at 18667
Jacob Brack.Road, Lodi in San Joaquin County. The location of the winery facility is shown on
Attachment A, which is attached hereto and is made part of this Order by reference.
5. Activities at the winery include receiving and shipping grape juice or wine and distribution in
bulk containers. 'Neither crushing nor bottling occurs at the facility. Wastewater is generated
during tank, equipment, and floor cleaning activities. Wastewater is also generated when
stormwater falls on tank farms and mixes with process water.
6. A distillery has not been constructed at the facility, and the Discharger has no plans to install a
distillery.
7. During wine storage and distribution, various chemicals are used as cleaner/sanitizers. These
compounds may include the following:
Chemical Name and Tye Storage Agent Quantity Stored
Citric (granular) 50 lb bags in Storage Container 750 lbs
Anhydrous Ammonia Closed system pressure vessel 15,600 lbs
Liquid Nitrogen Vacuum Jacketed pressure vessel 3,000 gallons
