PERMIT/SERVICES
San Joaquin County Environmental Health Department
600 East Main Street
Stockton, CA 95202
PROJECT: Sutter Home Winery, Inc.
Westside Production Facility
18667 Jacob Brack Road
Lodi, CA 95242
SUBJECT: Sand Emplacement Under Proposed Infiltrator Chambers
Reference is made to the Soil Suitability/Nitrate Loading Studies and Domestic Wastewater
Disposal Operational Parameters Report conducted by Chesney Consulting for the above-
referenced project. Clarification has been requested as to the characteristics of the sand that will
be used for emplacement under the proposed Infiltrator Chambers.
The imported sand to be brought in by truck and trailer transfers should be classified as medium-
to-coarse sand and not fine sand. Fine sand is commonly referred to as "plaster sand' and should
not be used. The following ASTM Standard No. D 2487 regarding sand size classifications and
terminology should be adhered to: Coarse sand passes the No. 4 (4.75 mm) sieve and is retained
on the No. 10 (2.00 mm) sieve; medium sand passes the No. 10 sieve and is retained on the No.
40 (425 µm) sieve; and fine sand passes the No. 40 sieve and is retained on the No. 200 (75 µm)
sieve. Consequently, the imported sand to be placed under the Chambers should not pass the No.
40 sieve.
Of paramount importance is the requirement specified in the referenced Report, that the sand to be
imported and placed under the Infiltrator Chambers be washed so that less than 5% "fines" (clay
or silt sized material) adhere to the sand particles.
Respectfully submitted,
Qrofexaio
CHESNEY CONSULTING Hca °p.
