The San Joaquin County'Environmental Health Department (EHD) has
requested that the sand to be imported for emplacement under the Infiltrator Chambers within the
domestic wastewater disposal area conform to specific requirements.. These sand characteristic "
requirements have been promulgated by the Central Valley Regional Water Quality Control
Board. i
The subject Report references an application rate of wastewater effluent over the entire disposal
area to be calculated at 0.422 gallons/ft2/day (Pg. f8). An Effective Size(D,0) between 1:5 to 2.5
mm and a Uniformity Coefficient (Cu-D60/D 1.) between I and 3 should theoretically allow an
effluent application rate of 5 gallons/ft2/day, creating an ample safety factor and increasing
longevity.
On September 1, 2010, a Materials Evaluation Data Sheet for Reject Concrete Sand from KRC
Aggregate, Inc. was received from Mr, Carl Christofferson of Sutter_Home Winery. To determine d
if this sand material was acceptable to be used under the.Chambers, a particle-size graph was
constructed to calculate Effective Size, Uniformity.Coefficient, and the Coefficient of Curvature
(See Number O under the Attachments). From this data, the classification of the subject material
was determined to possess an Effective Size of 0.21 mm, and a Uniformity Coefficient of 6.2.
This characterizes the KRC material as a poorly-graded sand(very nearly a well-graded sand).
The graph illustrates there are too many finer-sized particles that would impede effluent
permeability. Although this material is=unacceptable, it is included in this report for EHD's
informational and comparison purposes.
Page l of 2
P. O.
