This letter presents the
results of these tests.
Please find attached a summary of the soils encountered in our
initial test holes. The site conditions and the soil profile
encountered in our test holes made the running of the percolation
tests difficult. A clean sand stratum was not encountered. In
addition a perched layer of subsurface water was encountered in
each of the test holes at a depth of 7 to 10 feet. This was likely
the result of the on going irrigation of the fields. This perched
water would flow into the test holes and prevented a test being ran
at a deeper depth. Consequently, the three tests performed, were
done at the most suitable stratum above this depth.
Test holes were 4. 5 inches in diameter and at depths ranging
from 5 to 7 feet. Two inches of gravel was placed in the bottom of
each hole. A 2.5 inch diameter perforated pipe was then placed in
each hole and backfilled with gravel. Test holes were filled with
water 24 hours prior to running the tests. The last half hour of
the tests readings were witnessed by a county health official and
the test data obtained is attached. The percolation rates have
been adjusted to account for the gravel and pipe backfill.
Calculations for adjustments are on the test data sheets. A
summary of the test results is presented next:
Diameter of Depth of
Test No . Hole (in. ) - Hole (in. )- Percolation Rate (min/in)
PT-1 4.5 72 45
PT-2 4.5 60 19
PT-3 4. 5 84 56
