..i
FrData
vironmental fate data for the applied herbicides have been documented. This list
is data, and suggests the half-lives of the listed materials are comparatively fast.
tained from the Illustrated Handbookof Phvsical-Chemical Properties antal Fate for Organic Pesticide Chemicals:
DICAMBA. Common name: Clarity. Half-lives in the environment: Air: 2.42-6.0 days.
Soil: estimated persistence of 2 mos. Half life of 59, 19 and 17 d. under
various conditions. Under heavy clay soil 50%degraded in 2 wks.
Groundwater:23.5 d. @ 28 degrees C.
CPA. Common name: Rhomene MCPA Amine. Half-lives in the environment:
Air: Unknown. Soil: 50 d. in sandy clay. 168 hrs in sludge and 9 d in
natural waters. Groundwater sediments: 80 to 400 d. at low concentrations
CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
From visual observations, there is a comparatively small amount of surface contamination from
the pumping and refilling of the above ground diesel tank, and from the above ground fertilizer
tank. Greater care should be taken when refilling fertilizer application tanks. The probability of
groundwater impact from these two substances can be considered slight. Subsurface
contamination from pesticides can also be considered low-to-nonexistent, considering the
referenced environmental fate data. The surface soil type is predominately a clay soil. The
biological activity of this soil type would be expected to be higher than in sandy soils, thus
creating a favorable environment for microbial decomposition of organic molecules.
Depending upon the results of the water tests from the existing well, the new domestic well to be
installed should be tested for nitrate and DBCP. It is recommended that bottled water be used for
drinking and cooking. The subject property is outside delineated areas in which all new wells
must have a erout seal to 200 feet.
It is our opinion that contamination originating from on-site, or nearby septic systems is very
slight due to the extremely low density and large area. Density of septic systems is a prime
factor for nitrate contamination of the underlying groundwater. If high nitrate concentrations
exist in the underlying aquifers, it is most likely from agricultural inputs.
Page -4-
Va4ey Ag?research
