Surface &Subsurface Contamination Report Page 10
Sandhu Project
Project No. 597.1
February 12, 2009
Vernalis Quadrangle and the map Lines of Equal Depth in Water Wells, which is
attached to Geology of Fresh Groundwater Basin, Central Valley, California
USGS Professional Paper 1401-C 1986. Based on this map the surface of
groundwater is estimated to lie less than 10 feet below grade and flows in a
northeasterly direction. Groundwater monitoring data from two remedial
investigations in, or near, New Jerusalem, about 2 miles south of the Property
suggest that locally, groundwater lies at about 13 feet below grade and flows in a
northerly direction.
The nearest open body of water is the San Joaquin River, adjacent to the east.
The Banta Carbona Lift Canal forms the northwest boundary of the Property.
According to maps in the EDR report, much of the Property lies within the 100-
year flood zone, but the area does not include the existing building complex.
In much of the Central Valley, the shallow groundwater contains marginally
potable water, and generally the only water production wells completed opposite
this zone are domestic wells. The shallow aquifer is composed of shallow sand,
and silt alluvium deposited on the valley floor. Hotchkiss & Balding, in their
1971 US Geological Survey report, Geology, Hydrology. and Water Quality of the
Tracy-Dos Palos Area San Joaquin Vallgy, Cali ornia, (Open File Report 72-
169) described the aquifers and their characteristics for the Tracy-Dos Palos
area. In the Vernalis-New Jerusalem area, the recent alluvium is generally less
than 100 feet thick and directly overlies the Tulare Formation, a Plio-Pleistocene
age, mixed clastic sequence of clay, silt, sand and gravel. There is little to
distinguish the contact between the base of the alluvium from the top of the
Tulare Formation
Petroleum Production
Based on oil and gas production maps produced by the California Division of Oil,
Gas and Geothermal Resources, the McMullen Ranch Gas Field lies about 1 mile
east of the Property. Several exploratory gas wells were drilled near the
Property, but were abandoned as dry holes. It does not appear that any
petroleum production wells have ever been drilled on the Property.
Federal Wetlands
Based on information on the map in the EDR report (Appendix D) the Property
does not include lands recognized in the federal wetlands inventory, although
lands immediately adjacent along the river do include federal wetlands.
i
2937 Veneman Ave.,#B240 Geo-Phase Environmental Inc.
