San Joaquin County Community Environmental Setting,Impacts, and Mitigation Measures —
Development Department Biological Resources
Prefield Investigation and Coordination with Resource
Agencies
To prepare for the field surveys, biologists reviewed the existing resource
information related to the project area, described above, and coordinated with
resource agencies to evaluate whether special-status species or their habitats
could occur in the project area. This information was used to develop lists of
special-status plant and wildlife species and other sensitive biological resources
that could be present in the region. Species were included in these lists if they v
were known to occur in the project region(10-mile radius around the project site)
and if their habitats could be located in the project site. Plant and wildlife species
identified as having the potential to occur in the project region are discussed _
below.
Field Surveys
2003 Habitat Assessment
Wetland Research Associates, Inc., conducted a habitat assessment of the project
area on May 9,2003. The purpose of their assessment was to determine the
following.
1. Habitat suitability and likelihood of occurrence of special-status plant and
wildlife species potentially occurring at the site.
2. The presence of wetlands potentially subject to federal jurisdiction under
Section 404 of the Clean Water Act(CWA).
3. The presence of stream or riparian areas potentially subject to state
jurisdiction under Section 1601 or the California Fish and Game Code.
2005 Field Survey _
The Jones & Stokes biological team reviewed the habitat assessment report that
was prepared for the proposed Project in May 2003 (Wetlands Research
Associates,Inc. 2003). This biological resources section is based on the
information contained in the May 2003 habitat assessment report, information
gathered from the above-listed resources, and a reconnaissance-level field survey
of the project area by Jones & Stokes biologists. The general purpose of the field
survey was the following. —
■ Verify the results of previous biological studies conducted on the project site.
■ Characterize plant communities and describe associated wildlife habitat uses,
using the best available base maps to prepare figures for the EIR.
■ Assess existing conditions and characterize habitat for special-status plants _
and wildlife.
■ Verify that there are no waters of the United States on the project site.
■ Identify potential direct and indirect impacts on biological resources located
on and adjacent to the project site.
DeSilva Gates Quarry Project
Draft Environmental Impact Report 3.D-2
As 05105.05
