KLEINFELDER
natural cementation of the remolded soils, the reclaimed slopes were analyzed for circular
i
• failures. The results of these analyses are presented in the appendix.
i
The effect of earthquake-induced ground shaking on the slopes was evaluated by applying a
pseudo-static seismic load. Based on the proximity of the nearest faults and estimates of
maximum probable earthquakes, it is our opinion that a 0.15g design acceleration value is
appropriate for this study.
As noted on the plates in the appendix, the computed minimum factors of safety for the quarry
excavation were 1.5 and 1.2 for static and pseudo-static conditions, respectively. The
computed minimum static and pseudo-static factors of safety for the reclaimed slopes were 1.8
and 1.3, respectively. These values meet or exceed the criteria normally used by our industry
as established by the Army Corps of Engineers, the Federal Emergency Management Agency,
Caltrans, and the State-of-Califomia Department-of-Water-Resources Division of Safety of
Dams. For this reason, it is our professional opinion that the proposed excavation may be
constructed as planned.
7. CONSTRUCTION SITE SAFETY
` Construction site safety generally is the sole responsibility of the Contractor, who shall also be
solely responsible for the means, methods, and sequencing of construction operations. The
Contractor should be aware that slope height and slope inclination should in no case exceed
those specified.
.. 8. ADDITIONAL SERVICES
Due to the relatively steep nature of the proposed slopes, Unconfined Compressive Strength
tests should be periodically performed on block samples obtained during the excavation of the
quarry to confirm the strength values used in our analysis. In addition, as the quarry is
excavated, a representative of our firm should inspect the slopes to determine if the observed
r- soils are consistent with the soil conditions anticipated in our slope stability analyses and to
identify soil conditions at the site that would decrease the anticipated stability factors of safety.
This inspection should occur at least as the quarry is deepened every 25 vertical feet and more
.. frequently if warranted by the soil conditions encountered.
9.
