Blewett Road was improved within the last 10-years to a two-lane, 48-foot wide paved roadway (two 20-
foot travel lanes with 4-foot shoulders). At the same time, the section of Bird Road from the intersection
with Blewett Road north to the intersection with SR-132 was improved to a two-lane,40-foot wide paved
roadway(two 16-foot travel lanes with 4-foot shoulders). To the north of SR-132,Bird Road is generally
a two-lane road with a 24 foot paved width with no paved shoulders. The Bird Road intersection with
SR-132 is located approximately 2'/4-miles east of I-580 and approximately 1-mile west of I-5. The
intersection is a four-way at-grade intersection with stop sign control for traffic entering from both legs of
Bird Road.
Blewett Road is a two-lane east/west county local rural road which extends from Bird Road in San
Joaquin County cast to SR-33 in Stanislaus County. Blewett Road between Koster Road west to the
approaches to the Blewett Road over crossing over I-5 and from just to the west of the California
Aqueduct bridge to Bird Road has a 20-22 foot paved width with no shoulders. The segment from the
approach to the over crossing over I-5 to the west end of the California Aqueduct bridge generally has a
28-30 foot paved width including 2-3 foot paved shoulders. Blewett Road intersects Koster Road
approximately 1-mile south of SR-132 at a four-way at-grade intersection with stop sign control for traffic
entering from both legs of Blewett Road. Blewett Road also intersects Bird Road approximately I-mile
south of SR-132 at a "T" intersection with stop sign control provided on the Blewett Road intersection
approach. Approximately 100-feet of Blewett Road at the approach to Bird Road was reconstructed when
Bird Road was improved.
STUDY AREA INTERSECTIONS AND ROADWAY SEGMENTS
The following study area intersections and roadway segments were identified for evaluation during both
the AM and PM peak study hours.
• Intersections:
• SR-132/BirdRoad
• Bird Road/Blewett Road
• Koster Road/Blewett Road
• Koster Road/New Quarry Entrance(with project only)
• Roadway Segments:
• SR-132 west of Bird Road
• SR-132 between Bird Road and I-5
• SR-132 east of I-5 —
• Koster Road between Blewett Road and SR-132
• Blewett Road between Koster Road and Bird Road
• Bird Road between Blewett Road and SR-132
In addition, and as relevant to this study, peak hour operations at the I-5/SR-132 interchange are
described. _
EXISTING TRAFFIC VOLUMES
As part of the traffic forecast update for the SR-132/Bird Road Interchange Project Report, peak period
intersection counts were collected at the Route 132/Bird Road intersection on Wednesday, May 4, 2004.
Intersection turning movement counts were collected during the AM hours between 5:00 and 8:00 a.m.
and during the PM hours between 2:00 and 6:00 p.m. Based on the review of this data, the AM peak hour
2"d Draft DeSilva Gates Quarry Trafc&Circulation Analysis 6 October 2005
Jones&Stokes (R905TIS002/25-4000-02)
J
