KLEINFELDER
glass sample ampoule. The vacuum in the sample ampoule draws groundwater through the tip
into the glass ampoule. The glass ampoule is then pulled out of the pipe, disengaging the
syringe. The septum in the glass ampoule and.drive tip reseals after the syringe is removed.
To reduce the potential for introducing contaminants into the samples, the drive tip, galvanized
pipe, and other equipment used for sample collection are steam cleaned and/or washed with
trisodium phosphate or non.-phosphate detergent solution and double rinsed with distilled water
prior to use. The sample probe and filters arc cleaned in TSP solution and rinsed with methyl
alcohol followed by a distilled water rinse prior to use. New, factory-sterilized syringe needles,
O-rings, septum's and sample tubes are used for each sample.
B-2.7 Sample Handling
After labeling, the sample is immediately stored in an iced cooler for transport to KIeinfelder's
office sample control or to the analytical laboratory. A Kleinfelder chain-of-custody form
accompanies the cooler. The chain-of-custody form includes Kleinfeldcr's name, address and
telephone number, the employee number of the individual who performed the sampling, the
sample numbers, rnbers, the date and time the samples were collected, the number of containers each
I
sample occupies, the sample matrix (soil or water) and the analyses for which the samples are
being submitted, if any. The chain-of-custody form is signed by each person who handles the
samples, including all Kleinfelder employees and the receiving employee of office sample i
control or the analytical laboratory when the samples are delivered.
a
B-2.8 Decontamination of Equipment
To reduce the potential for cross-contamination, augers and associated equipment are steam
cleaned prior to drilling each boring. In addition, sampling equipment is cleaned with a
trisodium phosphate or non-phosphate detergent wash and rinsed with distilled water prior to
collecting each soil sample.
B-2.8.1 Geoprobe Decontamination
1
To reduce the potential for cross-contamination, Geoprobe pipe and associated equipment are
steam cleaned prior to advancing each boring. In addition, sampling equipment is cleaned with a
trisodium-phosphate wash and rinsed with distilled water prior to collecting each soil sample. #
Groundwater samples will be collected with a decontaminated stainless steel bailer.
B-2.9 Geoprobe Closure
Upon completion of Geoprobe sampling, the'bori"rigs wilFbe closed by'backfillirig the borings w.
with a zle- cerrienf grout,or'bentonite chips or powder.
4
20-Y PO-212/2000P256/2000 W022
Page E3-3
C0 2000 Kleinfelder,Inc.
