r
-- k" KLEINFELDER
by
4 ACTIVITIES CONDUCTED
I
Two shallow monitoring wells were installed between a proposed settling pond at the subject site
and the Delta Mendota Canal (see Plate 1). Additionally Kleinfelder attempted to conduct
groundwater sampling from three "deep" wells and one domestic well in and around the subject
{ site area. Specifically the work was conducted to monitor overdraft, perched water, flow patterns,
and possible changes to water quality beneath the proposed Phase I, IT and. III gravel pits of the
{ DSS facility. Kleinfelder's fieldwork is summarized in the following sections.
4.1. PERMITTING AND PRE-FIELD ACTIVITIES
Kleinfelder submitted a workplan to DSS based on comments by Ray Borges at PHS/EHD and
CDD requirements. Kleinfelder additionally submitted an application for installation of two
monitoring wells. The work was based on Kleinfelder's proposal dated September 27, 2000 was
authorized by DSS on October 2, 2000. The monitoring well application permit was approved by
PHS/EHD on October 6, 2000. The boring location area was marked in white paint and
Underground Service Alert was notified at least 48 hours prior to drilling activities.
Additionally, the proposed boring locations were reviewed by Chad Dessert of DSS. For a copy
of the boring permit, please refer to Appendix E.
4.2 MONITORING WELL INSTALLATION
Two soil borings (MW-1 and MW-2) were advanced on October 26, 2000 between the "Phase I
Settling Ponds" and the Delta Mendota Canal (Plate 1). The soil borings were advanced using a
truck-mounted drill rig equipped with 8-inch diameter hollow stem auger. Soil samples were
collected at 5 to 10-foot intervals beginning at 5 feet for logging purposes. The borings were
advanced to an approximate depth of 35 feet below ground surface (bgs). No subsurface
groundwater was noted in the two borings.
The borings were drilled and logged according to the protocol described in Appendix B. A two-inch
monitoring well was constructed in each of the two borings, as generally described in Appendix B,
Section B-3.1. The top of casing of monitoring wells MW-1 and MW-2 are approximately 195 feet
above MSL. Monitoring well MW-I was screened from approximately 14 to 34 feet bgs.
Monitoring well MW-2 was screened from approximately 15 to 35 feet bgs. The wells were
screened using Schedule 40 PVC pipe with 0.020-inch factory cut slots. A copy of the boring log
and well construction details are presented in Appendix A.
Soil cuttings generated while drilling were placed on the ground near the borings and left on site.
20-2245-36.E01/2011 R279 Page 4 of 10
Copyright 2001,Klcinfelder,Inc.
