The project proponent, DSS Engineering Contractors, is proposing
i;
.- to excavate 29,750,000 tons of material over a 56-year period. The entire 142-acre site
is proposed for excavation to a depth of approximately 125 feet. A proposed processing j
facility would occupy 11 acres of the project site. The proponent is proposing to complete '
' excavation in four mining 'I
phases, with an average of 400,000 tons per year being
excavated in each of the first seven years, and 550,000 tons per year duringeach of the
remaining 49 years.
One large pit is proposed to be excavated to a depth of 125 feet below grade and
4 reclaimed to a depth of 120 feet below grade. Approximately 42 acres would be composed
of pit walls, with 88 acres remaining in the pit bottom and proposed to be reclaimed to row
crops. The proponent is proposing working slopes of 3/
1 and final slopes of 1Y2:1, with
. . 20-foot benches every 20 feet on the pit slopes.
A detailed description of the proposed project is provided in Section 3.4.
A I
3.2 SETTING
Project Location
The project site is located in the southwest portion of San Joaquin County, south of the "
# City of Tracy and northeast of the intersection of Interstates 5 and 580 (Figure 3-1). The Delta
i
Mendota Canal runs along the eastern side of the project site, and the California Aqueduct
is contiguous with the southwest corner of the project site (Figure 3-2). The project site !'
Y can be found on the U.S.G.S. Solyo 15 Minute Topographic quadrangle map. 1
The project site is within an area containing significant nificant a '
ggrega#e deposits and several
other existing and/or permitted (but not yet operational) quarry excavations. The site has
historically been used as an apricot orchard, although approximately half of the trees were Ij
recently removed.
