INTRODUCTION Our office was contracted by Don Litchfield of Copperford, LLC.,Lockeford, California, to conduct a soil suitability/nitrate loading study for the proposed winery facility located at 12470 Locke Road, Lockeford, CA (Plate 1). The Assessor Parcel Number for the site is 051-320-09 and the San Joaquin County site approval application number is SA-00-36. The site is 22.8 acres in size. Mike Smith Engineering, Lodi, CA has performing the civil engineering for the project and has provided our office with the site plan and drawings for the project. The Soil Suitability/Nitrate Loading Study(SS/NLS) was conducted to determine whether the soils are suitable for the use with a septic system and to estimate whether the proposed project will impact ground-water quality. The study was performed according to the requirements of Section 9-1105.2(d)of the San Joaquin County Development. A major element of the field work included conducting a percolation test that meets the required absorption rates as required by San Joaquin County Public Health Service Environmental Health Division(SJC PHS-EHD). Additional requirements for the project beyond the SS/NLS are stated in a memo _ dated June 9, 2000, from San Joaquin County Environmental Health Division to San Joaquin County Community Development Department. This report addresses Requirement A of that memo. In addition to conducting the percolation test, a review of published soil information, geologic maps, and ground water information was performed to evaluate the suitability of soils for use with a septic system. A water sample was collected from the on-site water well and was tested for nitrate and DBCP. A nitrate loading balance was conducted to estimate any potential nitrate impacts to ground water.
