STATE OF CALIFORNIA GEORGE DEUKMEJIAN,Governor
CALIFORNIA REGIONAL WATER QUALITY CONTROL BOARD—
CENTRAL VALLEY REGION
3443 ROUTIER ROAD '
SACRAMENTO, CA 95827-3098
4 October 1989
Mr. James Miller
San Joaquin Public Health Service
P.O. Box 2009
Stockton , CA 95201
NICOLAYSON POULTRY VARIANCE 90-1
In a recent telephone conversation you indicated that Nicolayson Poultry had
applied for a variance to separate the poultry facility at 17250 E. Dodds Road
from the adjoining cropland. I have been informed that the Planning Commission ' s
decision not to approve the variance has been appealed.
It is my understanding that there are approximately 160 acres of cropland
available for poultry waste distribution. Reasonable waste loading would be in
range of 400 to 600 birds per acre depending on the crops grown. It is also my
understanding that approximately 100,000 layers are kept at the facility. It
therefore appears that the ranch is at or beyond reasonable waste loading rates
now.
If the cropland is'sold the facility will have to develop a waste management plan
that ensures that storage and disposal operations are in compliance with
applicable water quality regulations. If the acreage of available cropland is
reduced, the waste will have to be hauled off site or the scope of the poultry
operation may have to be reduced accordingly.
If I can be of further assistance in this matter, or if you have any questions
or comments, please call me at (916) 361-5711 .
LOUIS F.
