Environmental Setting
The project site is located in southern San Joaquin County in an unnumbered section of
Township 2S, Range 6E of the USGS 7.5-minute Lathrop topographic quadrangle (Figure
1). The project site is composed of a 161 +/-acre parcel in the vicinity of the Interstate 5
and State Route 120 interchange, south of Madruga Road, near Lathrop, California. The
project site is located between 10 and 15 feet elevation and is bounded by Southern
Pacific Railroad to the south, the San Joaquin River to the west, fallow fields to the
northwest, and residences with associated pastureland to the east. The entire project
site is an almond orchard.
Vegetation
Most of the natural vegetation in the project site is restricted to the edges of the property
and adjacent buffer areas (i.e., along the railroad track berm and San Joaquin River
levee). This vegetation consists of an assortment of non-native annual grassland grass
and weed species. Within the existing almond orchard, ground-level vegetation may
be best described as ruderal, with orchard development and maintenance significantly
limiting the growth of grasses and weeds. Vegetation between the tree rows consists of
a subset of the non-native annual grassland grass and weed species found in open
areas surrounding the orchard. Plant species documented within the project site during
the 2000 survey are listed in Table 1.
The only trees within the project site boundaries are almonds. Tree species adjacent to
the project site include Fremont's cottonwood (Populus fremonth), red willow (Salix
loevigata), valley oak (Quercus lobata) and tobacco tree (Nicotiona glauca). Some of
these trees adjacent to the project site are over 50 feet tall.
Wetlands
There are no areas in the project site which meet the technical criteria to be delineated
as Waters of the U.S. or wetlands which fall under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Army Corps of
Engineers. There are no vernal pools, streams, stock ponds, or any other types of
wetlands in the project site.
Landmark Lathrop: Biology 3 January 19, 2000
