10 June 2014
AGE Project No. 14-3035
The total nitrate-nitrogen (NO3_N) average concentrations in domestic waste ranges
between 20 to 85 milligram total nitrogen liter (mg/1-N) with an average of 45 mg/1-N
when washing and sanitation is considered.
The weighted average calculation for total nitrogen concentrations for on-site residential
flow is proposed as the following:
• Residential volume 360 gallons per day (gpd)
• Home use concentration 45 mg/1-N (SJCO EHD standard)
• The flow concentration of 13,000 mg/1-N gallon
9.4. FUTURE ON- SITE SOURCES OF NITRATE
The future use of the site will consist of long-term waste water from a minor commercial
application. Future development includes the addition of waste water loading into the
septic system under normal operational status and agricultural operations related to the
commercial sales (showroom) for wine or small scale winery. The one bathroom (sink
and toilet) to accommodate the potential employees and the potential visitors. A wine
glass wash and hand washing sink will also likely be incorporated into the discharge of
waste water onto the site. Waste products related to the production of wine will not be
disposed of through the septic system.
The reasonable or maximum usage of wastewater the one bathroom facility by 10
visitors (customer) is five gallons per day (gpd) per person. Other waste should not
contain appreciable concentrations of nitrogen (workers washing hands and glassware).
However, based on the type of proposed use of winery and showroom, a restaurant
value or cocktail lounge of waste water discharge should be added to the daily volume;
an additional 20 gpd per person will be added to the total. A total of 300 gpd (10 visitor
bathroom trips/day x 5 gpd; 10 worker bathroom/day x 5 gpd and 10 visitor associated
with a cocktail lounge/day x 20 gpd) is the projected total daily waste quantity (nitrogen
loading).
The total nitrate-nitrogen (NO3_N) average concentrations in domestic waste ranges
between 20 to 85 milligram total nitrogen liter (mg/1-N) with an average of 45 mg/1-N
when washing and sanitation is considered. It is estimated the proposed commercial
nitrogen waste concentration will be 65 mg/1-N, however, to prepare a conservative
estimate the concentration will be 85 mg/1-N and a heavy-weighted average will be used
to calculate the total mg/1-N loading over a long term for subject property. The weighted
average calculation for total nitrogen concentrations for on-site commercial flow is
proposed as the following:
• Commercial volume 300 gallons per day (gpd)
• Commercial concentration 85 mg/1-N (SJCO EHD standard)
• The flow concentration of 13,000 mg/1-N gallon
Advanced GeoEnviron mental,Inc.
