As an example: Field 8 = 17.3 acres. 252 lbs N- 17.3 ac = 14.5 lbs N/acre/hr of
irrigation for Field 8. For every hour of pumping, approximately 1.3 ac-in of irrigation water is
applied. This nitrogen concentration of 14.5 lbs N/acre/hr is straight holding pond water and does
not account for blending with Beaver Slough water. Note: Ammonium and nitrate are the only two
forms of nitrogen readily available for assimilation by plants. Consequently, the organic fraction
of Kjeldahl Nitrogen must mineralize to ammonium through the ammonification process.
Therefore, not all Kjeldahl Nitrogen is available.
Y
B. de SNAYER DAIRY FACILITY CROPLAND INFORMATION
Currently for the Home Ranch, a winter mix is planted in the fall and harvested in the spring. This
winter mix consists of 30%barley, 30% oats, 30%vetch and 10% orchardgrass. The converted
nitrogen requirements for this mix is as follows:
30% x 160 lbs. N per acre for barley = 48 lbs. N
— 30%x 115 lbs. N per acre for oats = 35 lbs. N
30%x 390 lbs. N per acre for vetch = 117 lbs. N
10%x 300 lbs. N per acre for orchardgrass = 30 lbs. N
TOTAL N per acre required by winter mix: = 230 lbs. N
Under the proposed dairy expansion, cropping patterns at the Home Ranch will increase from
double cropping to triple cropping, illustrated as follows:
✓ Winter mix is planted first of November: 230 lbs. N per acre required by winter mix.
✓ Winter mix is harvested in mid April.
✓ Silage corn planted first of May: 250 lbs. N per acre required by silage corn.
✓ Silage Corn is harvested in late August.
✓ Sorghum-sudan planted first of September: 325 lbs N per acre required x 33% due to short d
growing season = 110 lbs N per acre required by sorghum-sudan.
✓ Sorghum-sudan harvested in late October.
-19-
Chesney Consulting
