August 13,2019
Stephanie Stowers
Community Development Department
1810 E. Hazelton Ave
Stockton.CA.95205
Dear Stephanie,
As at the evaluation of our application for at the Use Permit is now underway, I thought I would
write a short note introducing myself and my business partner and describing our intent upon
establishing Sargent Equestrian Center.
Jeanne Williams and I knew each other in the Bay Area where I owned and managed a riding
school in Portola Valley and had a small sport pony/horse breeding program. Some of my growing
babies were in pasture on Jeanne's ranch in La Honda where she bred and trained Clydesdales and
boarded and trained other horses. When my school closed and she had to leave her ranch we
looked for a horse property in California and found what was then Bolea Farms which been
languishing on the market for several years. Although established as a reining horse training and
breeding business, its facilities were perfect for driving. We purchased it in 2008 and renamed it
Sargent Equestrian Center. I continued breeding horses on a small scale and Jeanne realized her
dream of establishing a carriage driving center. She has developed clinics and seminars for all
levels of drivers, from a beginning series in the spring,to more advanced seminars and clinics on
various skills needed for carriage completion for our clients. Whether our clients keep their horses
at home and drive in or board their horses here, they have become a real community. To support
them we have several shows during the year, including one Combined Driving Event, which lasts for
three days, attracts drivers from multiple states and Canada. We have open houses, caroling drives,
'play days'.
We also contribute to the area in non-equestrian ways. Sargent Estates is the site of the San
Joaquin Hospice Kentucky Derby West fund raiser in May;their largest fundraiser of the year. Also
once or twice a year the Budweiser Clydesdales 8 horse hitch stay at Sargent for a week or so when
they have gigs in Central California. The Budweiser staff hold an open house while they are here
for anyone interested in seeing their amazing horses(and dogs). Tours from senior retirement
centers come and Jeanne gives them a tour and talks about different kinds of horses, crowned by a
carriage ride around the property.
I guess I am trying to say that Sargent Equestrian Center is more than just a horse business: it is the
center of a real and growing community that serves the San Joaquin area and its many drivers. It
has shared its riches with the community at large and hopes to continue to do so in the future
Sincerely yours,
Margot Guis
Sargent Equestrian Center
15757 E.
