_ August 15,2003
Job Number:LG03-221
Page 11
8.0 DISCUSSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS
The site achieved a satisfactory percolation rate in an area near the existing north septic system
disposal field. A water well sample collected from the on site domestic well indicated that the
well water has a low nitrate level. The nitrate test indicated a level of 6 mg/L-NO3 (or 1.3
mg/L-N)which is well below the Environmental Protection Agency's maximum contaminate
level of 45 mg/L (or 10 mg/L-N) nitrate.
Our office believes the site is suitable for the use of the proposed small winery and tasting room
and the use of the winery will not cause a buildup of nitrate in the ground water above 10 mg/L-
N.
The suitability of the existing septic system for use with the winery is uncertain due to the lack of
available permit records and the old age of the system. We understand Ripken Vineyards desire
to utilize the existing septic system if both are found to be in working order. Therefore, our
recommendations regarding the septic systems are as follows:
Our specific recommendations for the project are as follows:
1) The septic tanks, tight lines, leach lines and sumps should be located and
unearthed in several locations for inspection. A qualified septic contractor should
prepare an inspection form describing location, layout, depth, and condition of
each septic system.
2) An EHD consultation inspection should be performed during the septic system
inspection. Please notify our office so we may observe the condition of the
system.
3) At the conclusion of the inspection, specific recommendations regarding the
suitability of the system for use with a small winery can be made by our office or
by the County EHD. Please note that driving vehicles over the leach lines or the
designated repair area should be avoided and is not allowed by the EHD.
?pERSO
s
z r
'rSOG♦
f
