Levels of human exposure to radioactive materials from the piles are low;however,in some cases tailings were used as construction materials before the potential health hazards of the tailings were recognized. In 1978, 24 inactive uranium mill tailings sites in Oregon,Idaho,Wyoming, Utah,Colorado, New Mexico,Texas, North Dakota, South Dakota, Pennsylvania,and on Navajo and Hopi tribal lands,were targeted for cleanup by the Department of Energy.
