August 26,2002
Job Number:LG02-286
` Page 10
little. In sands where there is very little clay, ammonium forms of can leach. Coarse-textured
` sands and some muck soils are the only soils where ammonium leaching may be significant.
One way to minimize N leaching and denitrification is to minimize the time the N is in the soil
before plant uptake. This cuts down on the time when conditions are favorable for losses.9
Joe Berghold indicated that the vineyard management with respect to soil fertilizers and
.. irrigation is performed by Larry Mettler of Arbor Vineyards Farm Management. Mr. Mettler
was contacted and indicated that petiole and soil samples are occasionally tested for nitrates and
other nutrients on the Berghold vineyard. A site specific fertilizer and irrigation program has
been developed for the Berghold vineyard by Larry Mettler.
Mr. Mettler indicated that normally, about 20 units of nitrogen per acre in liquid form
was applied to the 17 acres through the drip irrigation system. One unit of nitrogen is equivalent
to one pound of nitrogen. In addition, fertilizers are often broadcast to the cover grass as needed.
Irrigation was applied as needed.
Since the vineyard system is periodically tested and recommendations are provided by
agricultural consultants, the vineyard is assumed to be"in balance"—the proper nutrients and
irrigation is applied to the vineyard. The irrigation and nitrogen provided to the vineyard will not
be considered in the nitrate loading balance.
Nitrates from Winery Waste
The planned winery production is 3,600 gallons of wine per year. The waste water
generated from wine processing is the wash water needed to clean equipment and clean the inside
of the storage tank. The winery waste water will be contained in a tank and hauled off the site.
Since the waste water will be removed from the site, it will not be considered in the nitrate
loading balance.
Table 6 presents the summary of the nitrate loading analysis which considers nitrogen
from septic system waste water and nitrogen from rain water. The calculations were based on the
Hantzshe and Finnemore equation shown on Plate 9. As a result of the analysis, the use of the
septic system will not cause a build up of nitrates above the maximum contaminate level for
nitrates (10 mg/L-N) for the given assumptions. This is primally due to the large size of the
property and relative low daily flow of domestic waste water.
s Vitosh,M.L.,J.W.Johnson and D.B.Mengel,July 1995.Tri-state Fertilizer Recommendations for
Com,Soybeans,Wheat and Alfalfa,Extension Bulletin E-2567.
?E q10
4
y
2
