FAX (209)948-7194 February 20,2008 10-SJ-I2-PM 20.63 SCH#2008022092 ND Berghold Winery Project Jennifer Jolley San Joaquin County Community Redevelopment Department Development Services Division 1810 East Hazelton Avenue Stockton, CA 95205 Dear Ms. Jolley: The California Department of Transportation(Department) appreciates the opportunity to have reviewed the Negative Declaration for the proposed Berghold Winery project The Proposed project would involve allowing up to 25 special events per year at the existing facilities. The proposed project is limited to a change in how the existing facilities are used. The proposed project does not include any changes to the physical facilities on the project site. The Berghold Winery is an existing winery northwest of the intersection of State Route 12 (SR 12) and Cherry /toad, at 17343 Cherry Road,in the City of Lodi. The Department's comments on a letter dated January 10,2008 still apply. • The Department concurs with the statement on page 19 of the TTS that states"The improvement recommended under Existing conditions to improve sight distance at this intersection is to remove,or lower the height of,landscape vegetation on the northwest corner of the intersection of SR 12 and Cherry Road. This same measure would improve sight distance for project-related vehicles that would travel through this intersection." • An Encroachment Permit will be required for work(if any) done within the Department's right of way. This work is subject to the California Environmental Quality Act. Therefore,environmental studies may be required as part of the encroachment permits application.. A qualified professional must conduct any such studies undertaken to satisfy the Department's environmental review responsibilities. Ground disturbing activities to the site prior to completion and/or approval of required environmental documents may affect the Department's ability to issue a permit for the project. Furthermore,if engineering plans or drawings will be part of your permit application,they should be prepared in standard units. "Caltrans improves mobility across CAliifornia"
