z
information as well as upgradient and downgradient water quality
information fr-on the first encountered groundwater system.
Additionally, information was collected on the lithology present
at the site from the soil samples and borehole cuttings. The
following section summarizes the field work. Appendix A presents
a. Field Report containing detailed information.
3 . 1 Field Work. summary
Soil. borings included the collection of soil samples at 1, 3 and
5 foot depths at each location. The boring locations are shown
on Figure 2 . The soil samples collected were labeled with a
borehole number and depth combination for identification purposes
( i . e. , BA-1. = sample from borehole BA collected at a depth of
1 ' ) In addition, records of soil. textures/1ithologies were
.
maintained and are presented in Appendix A. All boreholes were
drilled with a power auger but sampled at each appropriate depth
with a hand auger. These soil samples were submitted to the
WESTON Analytics' Stockton, California laboratory for analysis.
Groundwater monitoring wells were spaced around the operations
area in a triangular configuration (Figure 2) . Each well was
screened 2 to 3 feet into saturated soils, with the sand pack
extending an additional 1.5 feet or more above the water table to
allow for variations in water levels during any subsequent
sampling_ A well construction summary is provided in Table 1.
Table 1
Well Construction. The following procedures were performed
at each well: 1) measurement of depth to water and total depth
of- well , 2) pijrgi.ng of at least 3 standing well volumes by
bailing or bailing the well dry 3 or more times, and 3) bailing
sufficient water for sampling from the well . Although the
shallow monitoring wells were screened at least 2 feet into the
uppermost unconfined aquifer, only M13 (see Figure 2) yielded
enough water to be purged and sampled on the same day. The
monitoring wells MW1 and MW2 were bailed dry after removal of
only a few .liters of water. Recovery was very slow and the water
3 -
