Factors decreasing the groundwater nitrate concentration include denitrification, groundwater
movement(both vertical and horizontal), well pumping and hydraulics, and cleaner water
recharge contributing to a dilution effect. If each of these sources and attenuating factors could be
quantified on a mass balance basis, it may be that nitrate input is now roughly equivalent to
output. Given that agricultural irrigation recharge is the largest single contributor to groundwater
nitrate concentrations, and since the underlying and surrounding land has been farmed for several
decades, it could be assumed that the nitrate concentrations in the underlying groundwater should
be much higher than those observed, if the attenuating factors were not significant.- This is
particularly evident with the soil nitrate-nitrogen test results of the sampled depths. The
denitrification potential appears to be a factor due to the clay content. '
Adjustments may have to be made to the proposed wastewater management system if unforeseen
conditions such as an increase in wastewater flow volumes dictate. For example, if wastewater
flows are higher than projected in this Study, the septic system may have to be retrofitted with a'
dosing chamber tank and duplex pumps to dose the effluent to the filter bed Monday through
Friday when wastewater flows are expected to be much lower or nonexistent. As referenced,
domestic water use for the entire project, and landscape water use, must be kept to an absolute
minimum. Interior domestic water use can be accomplished with low flow toilets/water reducing
aids, the timing of showers, and regularly checking for leaks within the entire plumbing system.
The project plumber and septic system contractor must coordinate on the construction details of
the influent line coming from the Prayer and Meditation Center Restrooms to the 1,200 gallon
septic tank/pump chamber.
To keep organic loading to a minimum, garbage disposals (grinders) should not be installed in any
kitchen. Additionally, due to the indigenous clay soils, water softeners also should not be
installed. The sodium liberated by water softeners will disperse and deflocculate the clay lattice
soil structure and render the clay soil impermeable.
Page-12-
