Field Nutrient Water / Irrigation Procedures — Lima Dairy
With the phase II improvement at the Lima Dairy, the milking parlor and hospital
parlor will be washed several times daily using well water. The freestall barns
and flush alleys will be flushed using lagoon water. The water will flush the
manure from the dairy cows down the lanes and through gravity flow systems
which flow directly to a settling pond.
There will be four settling ponds: three remain in service while manure is being
removed from the other. Settling pond #1 and #2 are surface cleaned with a
backhoe as required several times per year. When settling pond #3 or #4
becomes full of solids, nutrient water flow is diverted to the other settling ponds.
The full settling pond is allowed to dry out for one to two weeks. The majority of
the solids are removed with a backhoe, leaving a portion of the solids at the
outlet end of the pond to act as a solids filter. This settling pond is now ready to
be put into service when the other settling pond becomes full.
Due to the slow flow through the settling pond, the majority (80%) of the manure
solids separate from the water. Water exits the settling pond and is directed to
the lagoon, where the majority of remaining solids settle out of the water. These
solids will settle to the bottom of the lagoon where they will decompose.
Periodically, approximately every 10 years, the "sludge" remaining will be
pumped from the bottom of the lagoon, dried, and properly disposed of off site.
The lagoon has an irrigation pump, which will be used to properly blend
proportions of nutrient water with clear water for application to each field. The
proportion of nutrient water required for each crop will be determined from soil
analysis and the amount of nitrogen the crop requires based on the stage of
crop maturity, less the estimated nitrogen release (ENR) from previous years'
manure solids applications.
Water is routed to one or more of 13 fields, totaling 397.20 farmed acres which
can be irrigated with nutrient water. 348.31 acres are rotated between alfalfa.
oats, corn, and wheat, and 48.89 acres are in almonds.
See the following table for a breakdown of the fields.
55-130-01 30.74 ac. wheat/alfalfa/oats/corn
55-130-02 40.43 ac. wheat/alfalfa/oats/corn
55-130-03 132.76 ac. wheat/alfalfa/oats/corn
55-130-07 30.60 ac. wheat/alfalfa/oats/corn
55-140-04 17.96 ac. wheat/alfalfa/oats/corn
55-140-05 20.88 ac. wheat/alfalfa/oats/corn
55-140-07 6.84 ac. wheat/alfalfa/oats/corn
55-140-08 9.09 ac. wheat/alfalfa/oats/corn
55-140-09 27.28 ac. wheat/alfalfa/oats/corn
55-140-10 13.73 ac. wheat/alfalfa/oats/corn
Western Design/David Avila 2001 26
