Nitrogen available from ENR varies with soil temperature and moisture content,
so each field's soil samples should be analyzed immediately before each
planting to accurately account for residual nitrogen available for the up coming
crop.
Irrigation applications need to be carefully managed to control field runoff due to
the slow rate of permeability. The frequency of application needs careful
attention to minimize plant wilting.
There will be 4115 head of dairy cattle (4370 animal units) on the properties,
producing 302,177 lbs. of nitrogen per year. 119,418 lbs. of nitrogen will be in
liquids, and 182,759 lbs. will be in manure solids.
Corn and wheat require 290 and 175 lbs of nitrogen per crop per acre, and there
is one crop of each per acre per year. Almonds and alfalfa require 480 and 200
lbs. of nitrogen per acre, and there is only one crop of either per acre, per year.
100 acres will be rotated in alfalfa each year and 49 acres are in almonds, with
the balance in corn and/or wheat silage.
According to the irrigation plan, nutrient water will be applied to 397 acres. The
nutrient water irrigated fields will require 173,242 lbs. of nitrogen per year.
119,418 lbs. of nitrogen from liquids will be applied. The balance, 53,824 lbs. of
nitrogen, will be applied as manure solids on these fields. The solids will be
properly incorporated into the soil to minimize losses to evaporation.
This is 29% of the total manure produced. The remaining 71% of the manure,
containing 128,935 lbs. of nitrogen, will be sold offsite.
The quantities in the above three paragraphs are calculated in Nitrogen
Collection Calculations and Nitrogen Balance, in appendix IVA of the Nitrate
Loading Study.
Shipping records will be kept onsite for at least seven years, to document how
many tons of manure are removed from the site. Recipients of manure must be
qualified agricultural users or fertilizer/soil amendment manufacturers.
°Western Design/David Avila 2001 28'
