Design and Specifications
Wastewater Treatment & Reclamation System
Design Report and Specifications
FOSTER FREEZE FACILITY
. Thornton, California
INTRODUCTION
This project anticipates construction of a single Foster Freeze fast-food facility. This design report
and specification addresses a wastewater treatment and reclamation system to meet the needs of
i, this facility. Wastewater production has been calculated by both AquaClear Technologies and the
San Joaquin County Department of Environmental Health using standards approved by both the
California Regional Water Quality Control Board and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
ESTIMATED TOTAL HYDRAULIC FLOW=4,400 gallons per 24-hour day
- The waste treatment plant proposed for this project is sized for maximum hydraulic flows (design
flow) of 5,000 gallons per 24-hour day (gpd)-600 gallons in excess of the estimated flows. This
report outlines the considerations for treatment to reclamation standards and disposal of the
wastewater generated by this development.
An NPDES permit, which will allow discharge to an onsite polishing pond from which local
,r surface or subsurface irrigation of nonfood crops will take place, is anticipated for this project.
The pond will be lined and highly bermed to minimize collection and infiltration of surface water
runoff. The pond will have a maximum capacity of 750,000 gallons, which is equal to five months
of system production at maximum flow rates. The pond will serve as a source of water for both
irrigation and fire protection.
The treatment system proposed is a Bio-Pure extended-aeration, complete-mix, batch-reaction
system manufactured by AquaClear Technologies, Inc. The Bio-Pure process has been certified by
the National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) using C-9 Criteria. A copy of the letter of certification
L is included in this documentation. The NSF C-9 certification results were obtained using a Bio-
Pure Model 30E 3,000-gpd secondary system. At secondary level, over a 60-day period, pH
ranged from 6.8 to 7.5 mg/L; biochemical oxygen demand ranged from 6.0 to 11.5; suspended
L solids ranged from 5.5 to 12 mg/L; and coliforms ranged from 2 to 18 per 100 ml. Discharge
temperatures ranged from 63.6 to 74.5°F. Dissolved oxygen ranged from 7.4 to 8.5 mg/L. Tur-
bidity ranged from 0.1 to 1.l NTU. All current production models of the Bio-Pure system use the
.r same flow process, but have had continuous upgrades to accommodate computerized microproc-
essor command and control.
With ozone disinfection and pressure filtration, the Bio-Pure system will exceed California Title
Lo 22 requirements for wastewater reclaimed for use as unrestricted food-crop irrigation and full-
body-contact recreation water. California Title 22 is the most stringent water reclamation stan-
1
