A. DAILY OPERATING PROCEDURE
All these duties can be performed within a 60-minute period.
1. Mixed liquor 60-minute settling test (1000-m1 sample):
'- a. Record settling results every 5 minutes for 30 minutes.
b. Record settling results every 10 minutes for next 30 minutes.
` Record the increments on the settling graph.
During the 60-minute period, observe any changes with the sludge and record these
changes in the daily log of the plant. If any sludge is observed rising to the top of the
.. sample cone, record the exact time of observation on the settling graph. Rising
sludge (called bulking) is usually an indicator of a nitrifying condition. This condition
' may indicate an oxygen starvation problem within the aeration chamber. If bulking is
16- observed, a dissolved oxygen test on a fresh sample of mixed liquor is required to
determine if aerator adjustment is required.
2. Filter backwashing (if applicable):
a. Ten-minute backwash cycle. This may be done during a 10-minute period of the
second 30 minutes of the settling test.
3. Chlorine feed supply check (if applicable):
a. This can be done during the 10-minute backwash cycle.
4. Ultraviolet light cleaning (if applicable):
a. Pull the wiper(s), a 30-second daily requirement.
5. Freshwater rinse (if required):
a. Clarifier
b. Chlorine contact chamber
c. Aeration chamber
60 minutes complete.
GENERAL OBSERVATIONS
The sewage system processes treated sewage in batches through several sequences. In
order to assist a new operator in recognizing normal operating conditions, a field checklist
outlining these conditions is included in the operations manual.
By observing the liquid level in the three basic chambers (not including the filters), it is
easy to recognize the phase of the operating cycle in the process controller (PC). Periodi-
cally, in order to determine that the equipment is operating correctly, the operator should
L- observe the sequence of operations through an entire processing cycle.
The settling time totalizer (optional), if recording time, is the obvious indicator that the
settling time program (STP) is operational and where the cycle is in the batch phase.
B. MANUAL OPERATION PROCEDURE
In order to observe operation when the system is in standby, either add water to raise the
`^ liquid level in the aeration chamber or control the cycle manually. If it is desired to check
v only pump performance, each pump can be started in sequence by manual switch
override.
1
