i
i
1.0 PROCESS DESCRIPTION I
The Clearwater Model CWW-450 wastewater treatment plant utilizes-both aerobic and anaerobic
processes to achieve treatment. The aerobic process involves an attached growth system, while
the anaerobic process is accomplished in a submerged filter, which also acts primarily as a fixed
film system. . . . .
In attached growth systems, microorganisms growing on a media remove soluble contaminants
from the wastewater, using them as a source of energy for growth and-production of.new
is'circulated through the media to provide contact with the
microorganisms. The wastewater
organisms. As new organisms form, the biological growth slowly becomes thicker, resulting in
anoxic conditions near the media. As the mass builds, the adhesion to the media is weakened
and the upper layers periodically slough off, exposing new media on which aerobic growth
continues. The accumulation of the biomass on the surface also provides for entrapment of
organic solids, which are attacked by extracellular enzymes that.solubilize the solids to make
them available to the microorganisms as a food source. The conversion of the organic matter
from soluble to biological solids allows for removal of the organic matter.''
The anaerobic process is designed to provide for both digestion of organic matter introduced into
the filter and for conversion of nitrate nitrogen into nitrogen gas, or denitrification. The
submerged filter provides an environment for development of a diverse bacterial population that
provides for solubilization of organic matter in the wastewater and for denitrification of the
nitrates produced during the aerobic treatment process. The organic matter in the wastewater
provides the necessary carbon source for the denitrifying bacteria.
