Schematic of Proposed Wastewater Improvements
Figure 4.1 shows the existing floor drains that catch the process wastewater from the
winemaking operations as well as the storm water at the facility. From the drains water flows via
gravity to a pump basin that has a low head—high volume effluent pump. The combined
wastewater will be pumped from the collection basin over a screen filter. The screen will
separate solids from the wastewater. From there water will flow into a new septic tank and via
gravity into a subsurface flow wetland. The wetland has been sized to treat the process water
and reduce the concentrations of nutrients and organic material by as much as 98%. After the
wetland, water will flow into a pump tank with a duplex pump system. Treated effluent will be
pumped to sprinklers in a grass field. The pump basin will also have an overflow to the existing
storm water detention area to divert storm water when the irrigated grass field has already
received its optimal amount of water.
%W 4.3 System Analysis
Subsurface wetland treatment systems can remove a significant amount of BOD from
*"' wastewater. Wetland treatment systems have been used for many years to treat various
w1m• municipal and industrial wastewaters. In recent years, wetlands have also been used to treat
`, winery wastewaters (Shepherd et al, 2001). FCE performed water balance and surface loading
rate calculations to assess the feasibility of the wetland treatment system.
*- 4.3.1 Water Balance Calculations
*.
Monthly water balance calculations were performed for the wetland, grass disposal area, and
stormwater detention area at Jessie's Grove Winery. Each element in the water balance
(wetland, grass, and stormwater detention area) has inflows and outflows. Inflows come from
process water, stormwater, direct rainfall, and overflow from the proceeding element. Outflows
include infiltration, evaporation, and overflow to the succeeding element. Figure 4.2 shows each
of the variables in the water balance and how they relate to each element. Further descriptions of
the variables follow.
%NW JESSIE'S GRovE WINERY 13 FEBRUARY 2004
*sr
