`, FALL CREEK
REPORT OF WASTE DISCHARGE ENGINF.ERTNG_INC.
,..
100%
90% -
80% — - -- -
70%
 60% -
on
50% ---
40%
30% -- ------ - -
20%
10% - - -
0%
0 2 4 6 8 10 12
~ Detention Time(days)
Figure 4.3. BOD Removal Efficiency
%W 4.3.3 Water Quality Requirements
After treatment in the wetland, winery wastewater and storm water will be used to irrigate an
adjacent grass field. Water used on the field will have reduced concentrations of BOD and
%W nutrients. However, to maintain healthy turf, certain water quality requirements will still have to
be met.
%W When wastewater is used for irrigation, water management for salinity and sodicity(sodium)
control is critical. It is important that the selected grass species have adequate salt and specific
ion tolerance and that there is an adequate supply of freshwater available to periodically leach
accumulated salts from the soil.
w Total Dissolved Solids. The Winery proposes to apply wastewater year-round to a grass field.
`. According to Maas (1984), grapes are moderately sensitive to salt, and oats are moderately
tolerant. In order to maintain healthy turf the total dissolved solids of the irrigation water should
`. be less than approximately 1,400 mg/L, and the wastewater applied to the oats should be less
than 2,100 mg/L.
Chloride. Chloride can cause specific injury (leaf burn, chlorosis twig dieback) to woody plant
%. species, but is not a toxic ion for grain, forage, or fiber crops. Guidelines (Ayers and Westcot,
1985) for interpretation of water quality for furrow irrigation report that there is no restricted use
if the source water chloride level is below 140 mg/L. Chloride is not expected to be a problem.
♦.
`,, Sodium. The effect of sodium can be both direct(plant accumulation) or indirect(nutritional
imbalance and impairment of the soil physical conditions). Because the winery process
wastewater will not be substantially enriched with sodium, calcium, and magnesium from the
► winery processing, it is unlikely that the wastewater quality will exceed standard sodium
-FA adsorption ratios.
JESSIE'S GROVE WINERY 19 FEBRUARY 2004
r..
