Architectural Narrative:
Phase One
The design and construction of the multipurpose building at St. Bernard's Catholic
Church begins the process for the new church campus to be recognized. This project
is the first phase of a complete master plan for the site. The 22,000 square foot
building is oriented fronting the future plaza, and parking for approximately 300 cars is
provided during this phase of work. The site design minimi es the amount of future
demolition site work, while still providing convenient site and building access.
The design of the multipurpose building is consistent with the master plan's colors
and materials, but is designed in a more austere and unembellished style. This design
strategy will allow for a more economical building so that phase one can be completed
promptly, and so that the future church will be more prominent on the site. The
orientation and design also accommodates future support space additions (phase 5).
The initial purpose of the building is for worship until the main church is built. A
space of approximately 10,800 square feet will hold up to 900 people seated for mass.
The space can also be used for large gatherings and banquets, which is served by
the adjacent kitchen. Sized for catering initially,it can be expanded into the adjacent
storage space when needed. The building is also designed to be used as a gym which
will be especially useful when the school (phase 6 & 7) is built.
The design team strives to design a building that responds to the needs of its users,
one that will serve the parishioners and the surrounding community. The first phase
of the master plan, the multipurpose building, produces a foundation for St. Bernard's
parish and the future growth in the master plan.
