Comparable Septic Tank Effluent Chemistry
In an effort to qualitatively and quantitatively analyze constituent concentrations for use in nitrate
loading analysis for the St. Bernard's Church Complex, septic tank effluent from three different
Churches with on-site septic systems were sampled. These three Churches represent different
septic system design installations, operations, and areas of San Joaquin County. The following
Tables illustrate the relative differences among the three Churches sampled.
TABLE 9
Stockton Baptist St.Patrick's Catholic Church of Latter-day
CHURCH Church Church Saints
5480 North Hwy.99 19399 East Hwy. 120 27150 Wilkinson Way
Stockton Escalon Tracy
Septic Tanks Four- 1,200 gallon One-2,000? gallon Two -2,000 gallon
tanks in series. tank tanks in parallel.
Operation Church and Elementary Church, with School Church
school. partially using sampled
septic tank.
Kitchen No Yes Yes
Septic Tank Compartment Last compartment of Second compartment First compartment of the
Sampled the last tank. second tank. The
percentages next to the Ammonia-Nitrogen and Organic Nitrogen concentrations indicate the
percent these constituents comprise Total Nitrogen. In addition, concentrations of weak, medium
and strong strength wastewaters have also been presented for comparison purposes from
Wastewater EneineerinQ, 3'Ed., in the three columns on the right.
TABLE 10
Stockton Baptist St.Patrick's Catholic Church of Latter-day wastewater Engineering
ANALYTE Church Church Saints Metcalf&Eddy 3rd Ed.
5480 North Hwy.99 19399 East Hwy. 120 27150 Wilkinson Way (Concentrations in mg/L)
Stockton Escalon Tracy Weak Medium Strong
Ammonia Nitrogen(NH,N) 6.5 mg/L(71%) 147.7 mg/L(82%) 61.1 mg/L(84%) 12 25 50
Organic Nitrogen 2.7 mg/L(29%) 32.3 mg/L(I8%) 11.9 mg/L(16%) 8 15 35
Total Nitrogen 9.2 mg/L 180.0 mg/L 73.0 mg/L 20 40 85
Total Suspended Solids 12 mg/L 452 mg/L 92 mg/L 100 220 350
(TSS)
Biochemical Oxygen 8 mg/L 391 mg/L 75 mg/L 110 220 400
Demand(BOD,)
PH 1 7.3 1 7.3 8.2 n/a n/a n/a
Toral Alkalinity 390 mg/L 864 mg/L 436 mg/L 50 100 200
Page -15-
Chesney Consulting
