We understand that the four animal-unit per acre standard is
being circumvented by asserting that only 10% of the manure will
ever reach the waste pond. Several questions arise: How was
this number determined? Under what conditions? How will it be
verified on site? How often will it be verified? Who will
verify it? What if the percentage rises above 18%
The twenty acre parcel on the west side of Van Allen Road
has been used for grazing of young animals. It is not contiguous
with the dairy facility on the east side of Van Allen Road. The
sewage pond would constitute a new useage, and should be viewed
as such. Should the pond, filled with untreated waste, be
allowed in an established area that is essentially high density,
rural residential?
We feel that the population density of this area is too high
to experiment with high intensity dairy farming. We ask that the
Site Approval #SA-93-27 regarding the expansion of the Joe
Doornenbal Dairy be denied, and that the dairy remain at its
current capacity of 160 cows, with all operations remaining on
the east side of Van Allen Road.
