L
LJune 1, 2006
NOA Project Number: E05179A
L5.4 Discussion of Soil Lithology
A visual inspection of the shallow soils from on-site drilling indicates some potential for percolation
Lbecause of the silty nature of the soils. A percolation test is the best method to determine the
suitability of the soils for a septic disposal area. Please see the next section for percolation test
results. Generally speaking,coarser-grained soils have much greater potential for percolation than
L
fine-grained or cemented soils.
L 6.0 PERCOLATION TEST INFORMATION
6.1 Percolation Test Locations
L A site map indicating the locations of the percolation test holes is included as Plate 1 in the appendix
of this report.
L 6.2 Number of Percolation Tests
L One shallow percolation test was conducted on each parcel. A total of four shallow percolation tests
were conducted on the property.A deep percolation test was performed on Parcels B, C and D.
6.3 Boring Preparation and Presaturation
One shallow and one deep soil boring were drilled on each parcel exce t f Parcel A which only
L had a shallow soil bo g. The four shallow holes were advanced on the site ' A.
in hand
augur on February 26,2006.Three deep borings were advanced on Parcels B, C and D with a truck-
mounted deep rock augur rig.
LA 1.5-inch diameter PVC pipe with perforations on the bottom was used to measure the drop of
water in the percolation test boring. Approximately 2 inches of"pea gravel"were placed in the
1 bottom of the open soil boring, then the PVC pipe was installed on top of the gravel. 'Tea Gravel'
L was then used to backfill in the annular space.
Presaturadon of the percolation test holes occurred 24 hours before the percolation testes were '
l• performed. The depth of water used to pre-soak was 12 inches above the bottom of the boring.
6.4 Condition of Borings After Presaturation
After the 24-hour soak period, the four presaturated holes were found to be intact and dry on the
Ldays of testing.
L.
6
L
L
