Ms. Wendy L. Cohen, Chief - 5 - 5 March 2003
to the depth and extent of ammonium identified in areas of spills can be addressed during remediation or
Lthrough confirmation samples.
If WFS intends to remediate ammonium and nitrate by excavation, it needs to provide a schedule to
develop a cleanup plan. If WFS intends to pursue other alternatives for nitrogen remediation, it needs to
prepare a FS/RO to discuss various options. A cleanup plan or a FS/RO should include site maps
illustrating where contaminated soil was previously removed, and where the on-site septic system is.
In the 1998 Remedial Alternatives Assessment, WFS presented a summary of all work that has been
completed at the site, including detailed presentation of the soil sampling history. The FS/RO does not
need to duplicate this work and may incorporate the Remedial Alternative Assessment by reference. The
primary objective of the FS/RO is to evaluate various methods to remove ammonium and nitrate from
soil.
AST
ti
r.
