4 Chemical Quality of Groundwater
Groundwater samples were collected from the following wells during the week of October 30,2018:
Shallow Zone
• SMW-1 • SMW-2 0 SMW-4
• SMW-5 • TP-1A
Intermediate Zone
• KEW-31J • KEW-4U 0 KI-5
Results from the October 2018 sampling are presented in Table 4. Table 4 also includes recent data for all wells
(approximately the last 3 years for most wells). Concentration of CDCs above the Water Quality Protection Standard
concentration limits (CLs) are bolded in blue. Water quality concentration contour maps for October 2018 are
presented at the end of this report, following the tables. Water quality concentration contour maps for May 2018
are included as Appendix D. For comparison purposes, water quality concentration contour maps for October 2017
are included as Appendix E.
Groundwater samples were collected, handled, transported, and analyzed in accordance with standard operating
procedures and EPA methods outlined in the WQSAP (Dudek 2O17a). Groundwater samples were analyzed for
halogenated VOCs and 1,4-dioxane using EPA Methods 826OB and 8270, respectively, byTestAmerica Laboratories
Inc. of Irvine, California. Quality control samples are included at the end of Table 4. Field parameter measurements
are presented in Table 9, Field Parameters. Laboratory analytical reports are compiled in Appendix F, Laboratory
Analytical Results, Fourth Quarter 2018. Field records of sampling activities in 2018 are included in Appendix A.
The permit establishes CLs as the cleanup targets for constituents deemed hazardous at the site and designates a
"Trigger Boundary"around the formerly regulated units(ponds). For CDCs that have not been detected at the site for
more than 5 years, CLs are Kearney-specific laboratory reporting limits. For CDCs currently detected (or detected at
the time the permit application was prepared), CLs are risk-based and were calculated as described in the permit
application (Dudek 2O17b).The CLs are listed in Table 8, Water Quality Protection Standard Concentration Limits,
and noted on Figures 7-17.
The permit specifies a revised monitoring program that is broken into two phases:during corrective action measures
(Phase 1) and after corrective action measures (Phase 11). Phase I monitoring is currently ongoing, concurrent with
corrective action measures. The goal for Phase I monitoring is to achieve the CLs in wells within the Trigger Boundary
(shown on Figures 7-17)and meet the method detection limits(MDLs) in wells outside the Trigger Boundary.Once
these goals are met, and following a site-wide monitoring event to evaluate whether CLs and MDLs have been met
in all wells, corrective action measures will be terminated and Phase 11 monitoring will commence.
MRP R5-2017-0125 outlines groundwater monitoring, sampling, and reporting in accordance with the DTSC permit.
D U D E K 10886-1
13 March 2019
