In the report, AGE describes the
collection of soil gas samples at approximately five feet below surface grade (bsg) from eight
temporary vapor points and collection of soil samples at five-foot intervals during the
advancement of six soil borings (137 through B10, B1 1N6 and B12/V8) to twenty feet bsg.
Analytical results from the investigation demonstrate that of the ten soil samples submitted for
analysis from the six soil borings, only total petroleum hydrocarbons quantified as aviation
gasoline (TPH-ag) and total xylenes were detected at 6.4 milligrams per kilogram (mg/kg) and
0.012 mg/kg, respectively, at twenty feet bsg in borehole 137-20. Of the eight soil gas samples
analyzed, however, high concentrations of TPH-ag were detected in temporary vapor points
V6, V7, and V8, at 1,960,000; 73,500; and 138,000 micrograms per meter cubed (Ng/m),
respectively. These concentrations are well above the Environmental Screening Levels
(ESLs) established for TPH quantified as gasoline (TPH-g) by the San Francisco Bay
Regional Water Quality Control Board.
AGE proposes to advance temporary soil vapor wells in the vicinity of the southwest corner of
the Lodi Airport caf6 building, and the east side of the Lodi Airport office building to confirm
the results from the recent investigation and assess the extent of the soil gas contamination.
AGE also recommends installing a soil vapor extraction (SVE) system using the proposed
temporary soil vapor wells, if necessary, to mitigate the soil gas plume. The EHD concurs
with the recommendations presented by AGE; please submit a work plan to the EHD by
September 24, 2009, to address the extent of the soil gas plume.
The EHD has concern reporting soil gas samples for TPH-ag by method T03, and methyl
tertiary-butyl ether (MTBE); benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene, and total xylenes (BTEX); and
isopropyl alcohol (IPA) by method TO15, as submitted by Cal Tech Environmental
Laboratories in this report.
