23 February 2000
AGE-NC Project No 98-0533 —f
• Report preparation
3 1 PERMITTING AND PRE-FIELD WORK ACTIVITIES
Applicable site assessment permits will be obtained from the PHS-EHD As required by PHS-EHD
permitting, a health and safety plan will be prepared in accordance with Occupational Safety and
Health Guidance Manual for Hazardous Waste Site Activities (National Institute for Occupational
Safety and Health Administration, U S Coast Guard and U S Environmental Protection Agency,
1985) Prior to mobilization, each soil boring location will be clearly marked and a utility clearance
obtained through Underground Service Alert
32 SOIL SAMPLE COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS
I
Initially, AGE proposes to advance four soil borings at the site to evaluate the lateral and vertical
extent of petroleum hydrocarbon-Impacted soil Soil borings may be advanced to ground water and
completed as ground water monitoring wells if sufficient field evidence suggests that a petroleum
hydrocarbon-impact to ground water has occurred Proposed soil boring locations are illustrated in
Figure 2
Total depths of borings will be based on field observations and field screening using an organic
vapor meter(OVM) equipped with a photo-ionization detector (PID Thermo Environmental 580A,
10 0 eV, calibrated to isobutylene) Soil samples will be collected from each boring at five-foot
intervals beginning at 5 feet bsg to the total depth Field procedures for advancement of borings and
collection of soil samples are presented in Section 4 1 At least one sample from each boring will
be submitted for laboratory analysis
Selected soil samples will be analyzed by a State of California Department of Health Services
(DHS)-certified laboratory for the following constituents
• Total petroleum hydrocarbons quantified as aviation gas (TPH-av) in accordance with EPA
Method 8015 Modified/5030,
• Volatile aromatics (benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene and xylenes BTEX) and methyl tert-
butyl ether (MTBE) in accordance with EPA Method 8020, and
• Fuel oxygenates, including tertiary butanol (TBA), di-isopropyl ether(DIPE), ethyl tert-butyl
ether (ETBE) and tert-amyl methyl ether (TAME) and MTBE in accordance with EPA
Method 8260M
• Selected soil samples may also be analyzed for intrinsic permeability, moisture content,
Advanced GcoF'nvironmental,Inc
