' Pozzolanic Northwest, Inc.• S
Northwest Larramie River Fly Ash 4-2791 2 1984
' Northwest Jim Bridger Fly Ash 4-2792
FISH BIOASSAY
' The following points relate to the test method:
' 1. The test procedure was that which is described in Standard Methods for the
Examination of Water and Wastewater (15th Edition) .
' 2. The test species was fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas) .
' 3. Soft water was used to make up the test solutions_ The total hardness was
46 mg/1 as calcium carbonate.
4. The sample required no screening. It was. already fine enough to pass through
' a number 10 (two millimeter) standard sieve.
5. . Two control tanks were used. One contained the soft water that was used in
' the test tank. The other contained the same water as that in the holding tank.
6. A preliminary test showed that the fish were able to tolerate a solution containing
' more than 750 mg/1 of the fly ash sample. Therefore, the percent survival method
was used. This allowed the use of 20 fish per tank instead of the 10 fish per
tank as called for in the LC50 method.
' 7. The test tank contained 750 mg/1 of fly ash sample in soft water.
8. The sample was alkaline so hydrochloric acid was added to the test tank to adjust
' the pH to equal that of the soft water control tank.
9. Alpha Analytical Laboratories, Inc., is approved for fish toxicity bioassay
examinations by the State of California Department of Public Health.
Alpha
Analytical Laboratories, Inc.
