(AMV), prepared this letter to document remediation
activity at the referenced site during 1993 and the first quarter of 1994, specifically, the period
from November 5, 1993 to March 25, 1994. Table 1 summarizes the system performance.
Figure 1 graphically presents hydrocarbon extraction rates versus time.
AMV activated the oxidation unit briefly on October 28, 1993, in the presence of a
representative of the San Joaquin Valley Unified Air Pollution Control District (San Joaquin
APCD), for the purpose of demonstrating operation and collecting air samples to verify
destruction efficiency. After San Joaquin APCD approval of the air sample analytical results,
AMV started operation of the system on November 5, 1993. The system ran a total of 68 days-
in the 140-dgy Loorting veriod ending March 25,_L994, Following is a month-by-month
summary of activity.
November 5 to 29, 1993
After start-up on November 5, 1993, the THERMTECH oxidation unit ran for about 19 days J
out of the 24-day reporting period. High_hydrocarbon concentrations during the start-up phase
made it necessary to supply dilution air from November 5 to 19, 1993. During the initial
operational period, the system experienced four shutdowns. One of the shutdowns was caused
by high temperature from the lack of sufficient dilution air, and the other three shutdowns were
a result of a burner control failure. On November 29, 1993, the unit was left down in order to
find a solution to the erratic performance of the burner control. During the reporting period,
the system extracted an estimated 5,133 pounds of h droc (based on field readings). The
laboratory results for an influent air sample collected on October 28, 1993, indicated an average
kpwao.m;
4511 Golden Foothill Parkway,Suite 1 (916)939-7550
El Dorado Hills,California 95762 Fax(916) 939-7570
