SITE OWNERSHIP/USE
Property ownership is not known from 1940 through 1954 when Teichert Land Company
(Teichert) acquired the property. Teichert leased APN 153-111-3 to Straub Food Products in
1977, to Food Service Inc. in 1981, and to London Produce Company (LPC) from 1987 to
August 31, 1994.
SITE VICINPTY/DESCRIPTION
The property is bound by E. Weber Ave. on the south, by the Southern Pacific Railroad on the
north, North E Street on the east, and C Street on the west.
LPC leased the western portion of the site, which was used for processing pickles. The eastern
portion of the site is used as a construction yard for Teichert Construction Company.
Monitoring wells exist on the eastern portion, but were installed for petroleum hydrocarbon
investigation. The subject of this report is the western portion that had been used for processing
pickled products. Additional pickling operations are located offsite north of the railroad and
west of the site.
The site, when being used by LPC, was approximately 42,000 ft' with a 1,800 ft2 warehouse,
a 1,100 ft2 house, and a 1,500 ft' concrete slab. The majority of the site was paved with 3 to
4 inches of asphalt concrete overlain with approximately 3 to 6 inches of sand. The site
contained approximately 90 vats, each with an approximate 4,000 gallon capacity.
The easterly half of the site drained to Weber Street, and the western half drained to the railroad
right-of-way. There were no clearly defined channels, and drainage was generally sheet flow.
The site was graded after LPC ended their lease in 1994.
GENERAL PICKLING PROCESS
The pickles were loaded into the vats by conveyor, and salt was loaded into the vats by hand
shovel from a forklift. Some salt was spilled near the vats during this process. After the
pickling process, the brine, which is generally table salt and calcium chloride (and occasionally
very small amounts of potassium sorbate), was pumped from tank to tank for brine recovery and
to permit removal of sludge from the tank bottom. The sludge and waste were collected onsite
in tank trucks for disposal. The pickles were removed from the vats by conveyor and final
processing was completed indoors. While indoors, additional brines and spices were added.
Any drainage from indoors flowed to the sewer system. LPC had a permit from the City of
Stockton to discharge to the sewer, however it should be noted that all discharge occurred on
the parcel west of the subject site. No sewer discharge occurred on the subject property. No
gro mdzelteicherdsitehist 1
