Main St., Lodi
San Joaquin County Public Health Services Environmental Health Division (PHS/EHD) has reviewed the results
of excavation sampling submitted to this office in a letter dated August 26, 1994 from Geological Audit Services,
Inc. for the above referenced site.
The presence of contamination in the west wall sample at 10 feet has been confirmed by laboratory analysis. Levels
of Toluene and Xylene have exceeded the maximum allowable levels that can :be left in place for these two
contaminants as recommended in the Leaking Underground Fuel Tank (LUFT) manual, revision October 1989.
Toluene may not exceed .3 parts per million(ppm),the result is 1.2 ppm. Xylene may not exceed 1 ppm, the result
is 5.7 ppm
The west wall sample was obtained below the foundation of the east side of the building. In order to reduce the risk
of damage to the building, excavation in this direction was discontinued.
The remaining contamination beneath the building must be defined laterally and vertically. Sufficient data to estimate
the mass of the remaining contamination shall be obtained. The estimate shall be used as the basis of a feasibility
study for removing the remaining contamination or a risk appraisal of leaving the contamination in place. The data,
the feasibility study and or the risk appraisal may be submitted in one report.
Please submit a workplan for the investigation of the contamination beneath the building within 30 days of the date
of this letter. If additional borings will be required for the investigation then the expiration date of permit#93-1695
for V&W Drilling may be extended to expedite the process. If a different drilling contractor is selected then a new
permit and a fee of$89.00 will be required prior to drilling at the site.
Donna Heran, REHS, Director
Environmental Health Division
i
Steven Sasson, enior REHS Diane M.
