PHS/EHD has the following comments for your
consideration.
The report included the results of the March 4, 1994 sampling event. Groundwater contamination was
evidenced by laboratory results in samples collected from MW1,MW4,and MW5. Groundwater contaminants
were not detected in samples collected from MW6, MW7, and MW8. No sample was collected from MW3
because the well had not recharged between purging and sampling which was approximately 2 hours. The
boring logs submitted in the addendum to the problem assessment report indicated that MW2 had been drilled
to 60 feet, yet a groundwater elevation measurement was not obtained. The wells which were installed in
1987 are of a shallower depth and due to a decrease in the groundwater elevation in the region require
additional time to recharge; therefore, please purge these wells first so that a maximum amount of time may
be available for recharge.
The report included a recommendation to decrease the sampling frequency of MW6, MW7, and MW8 to
annually. Based on available monitoring data, PHS/EHD does not concur with the recommendation to
decrease the quarterly sampling frequency. The gradient direction has been reported in at least three different
directions within the last two years: north/northeast,northwest,and most recently south/southwest. The next
groundwater sampling event has been scheduled June 1994 and should include all monitoring wells.
The addendum included a request for an extension of the May 16, 1994 due date for the submittal of a draft
final remediation plan and executive summary, until June 16, 1994. PHS/EHD grants the extension until June
16, 1994 for the submittal of a draft final remediation plan and executive summary.
If you have any questions, comments or wish to schedule a site inspection, please contact Mary Meays,Senior
REHS, of my staff at (209) 468-0337.
Donna Heran, REHS, Director
Environmental Health Division
Mary Meays, Senior REHS Dian .
